Kaahin Kissii Roz

Kaahin Kissi Roz (2001-2004) was a suspense thriller aired by Star Plus. It was story about the Sikand family. For the casual observer, the Sikand family had everything - money, power, authority - but there was always an air of mystery that surrounded the powerful matriarch of the family, Ramola Sikand. Ramola Sikand was credited as single handedly creating the Sikand empire. Her stepson, Kunal Sikand was being groomed by her to become her right hand man. Everything changes when Kunal brings Shaina into their lives. Kunal and Shaina have a whirlwind romance which ultimately leads them to marriage. Ramola is not pleased with her son's choice but she accepts Shaina nonetheless. Once Shaina comes into the Sikand house, strange things start happening. It is later revealed that Kunal was previously married to Sunaina. Ramola conspires to murder Sunaina to gain access to her inheritance. Unfortunately Sunaina escapes, but is badly injured. She undergoes plastic surgery and comes back into Kunal's life as Shaina. Shaina thinks that Kunal was also involved in the plot to kill Sunaina but Shaina later finds out that Kunal was innocent and it was Ramola who planned it all. Then begins the cat and mouse game between Shaina and Ramola.

Kaahin Kissi Roz was such a different show. It wasn't a saas-bahu roona dhoona type of a show. There were twists and turns every week. Even though this show had a saas and a bahu, they had a different kind of battle. Theirs was a power struggle. Never before had there been such a show on Indian television.

Ramola Sikand was a powerful woman. All her life she used her intelligence to get what she wanted. She managed to become the matriarch on the Sikand family not by accident but by careful planning. The one thing she loved unconditionally was power and she would do anything keep a hold on her power. She was shrewd, cunning and knew how to get things done. She always got what she wanted and did not shy away from getting her hands dirty in the process. In short she was the prototype for every other vamp that followed. From her styling to her attitude to her dialogues, she was a trendsetter. Before Kaahin Kissi Roz, most of the antagonists in shows were primarily male. This show changed that forever. Ramola was just as cruel and shrewd as her male counterparts. In fact, she would not hesitate to kill her own children to gain access to what she set her eyes on. Sudha Chandran did an excellent job playing Ramola Sikand. Needless to say she garnered a lot of praise from the audience.

Shaina Sikand was no ordinary bahu. She stepped into the Sikand household with an agenda. When she realizes that Ramola is the villain, she sets her sights on getting justice for her husband and his mother. She is also intelligent and knows how to rattle Ramola. She is patient and believes in playing her best cards last. If Ramola is determined, then Shaina is strong. Shaina knows that Ramola's weakness is the power that she so desperately fights to hold on to and uses that very power to get her revenge. Mauli Ganguly played Shaina wonderfully. She added a lot of depth to Shaina's character.

Kaahin Kissii Roz was one show that waited for every night. I loved watching it because it was so unpredictable. Every episode had a twist. Some times it seemed like Ramola had the upper hand while some times it seemed like Shaina had the upper hand. Also, Ramola's wickedness was addicting to watch. I couldn't imagine that a woman could be this cruel. It made for a interesting watch. Also this show had the most craziest story line ever. People were getting plastic surgery like it was child's play. People were coming back from the dead faster than zombies come back. Now that I look back it does seem a bit ridiculous, but at the time it was path-breaking. Towards the end of the series, there is even a re-birth twist that takes place. Seems like this show employed every possible story trick used in saas-bahu sagas at the time.
