DIll Mill Gayye

Dill Mill Gayye was also broadcast on Star One. It was the second season of Sanjeevani - a medical drama. It was a fun show meant to partly educate and mostly entertain. It was about young doctors trying to learn as much as they could while still having fun. It was mainly geared to the youth audience. I for one enjoyed watching DMG and stayed loyal to show to the very end, which is very odd for me since I tend to stop watching shows when their story lines become boring or monotonous.

Dill Mill Gayye is the story of young doctors as they pave their paths in the medical field. We meet Dr. Riddhima, Dr. Armaan, Dr. Atul, Dr. Anjali, Dr. Abhi, Dr. Nikita, Dr. Muskaan and Dr. Rahul as they start out their internships at Sanjeevani Hospital, one of the most prestigious hospitals in India. We also meet Dr. Keerti, the strict preceptor, who is in charge of making these interns the best doctors in India. Sanjeevani Hospital is run by Dr. Shashank Gupta, the father of Riddhima and Anjali. Only a lucky few doctors get the opportunity to become interns at the prestigious hospital. We get to witness the different opinions that each character has on how best to improve the lives of patients.

Riddhima is the heart of DMG. She is kind and caring. She loves her father and has immense respect for him. She is a dedicated doctor and wants to make her father proud. She is naive at times when it comes to life. She is very traditional and holds her values to high esteem. If Riddhima is the heart of DMG, then Armaan is the soul of DMG. He is the cool, fun-loving guy that every girl wants to be with. He is handsome and charming and knows how to use his good-looks to his advantage. He is a dedicated doctor but he does not believe in being too serious and focused. He likes to have fun and let loose. What started out as a prank between Anjali and Armaan turns to be a passionate love story between Armaan and Riddhima. I love the way humor, passion and romance are interwoven seamlessly in their love story.

Unfortunately, DMG became a victim of Star One's transition scheme. Armaan and Riddhima were to be engaged but they become victims of a shooting in Sanjeevani. The audience is left to wonder what happened to the two beloved characters as a new cast is introduced to them. We are introduced to Dr. Siddhant aka Sid, Dr. Tamanna, Dr. Naina, Dr. Yuvraj aka Yuvi, Dr Suvarna aka Sue, Dr Shilpa, Dr. Raj and Dr. JP.

Sid and Tamanna are portrayed like the new Armaan and Riddhima. They are complete opposites. Sid is a spoilt rich kid whereas Tamanna is the daughter of one of Sanjeevani's janitors. Although they initially fight all the time, they later form a delicate friendship. Slowly but surely Sid falls for Tamanna. But Tamanna decides to obey her parent's wishes and marries another man. I personally feel like Tamanna's character was written off to make room for Riddhima's return. As per huge public outcry, Riddhima was written back into the show but Armaan wasn't. A whole lot of crazniess takes place between Sid and Riddhima which results in them getting married. Only after their marriage does Armaan return. Makes me mad just thinking about it.

That leaves us with Yuvi and Naina. Naina is from a strict Gujrati family. Her father wants her to get married as soon as possible. In fact, he keeps sending her pictures of potential grooms which is why she decides to do her internship at Sanjeevani. From the first time she meets Yuvi, she has a crush on him. Yuvi on the other hand comes to Sanjeevani with a specific purpose. Once Naina gains his trust, he finally tells her about his past. Yuvi and Naina share a passionate love story. In the end, Nania too chooses to side with her family and breaks up with Yuvi. Sue is Sid's twin sister, whereas Shilpa is Riddhima's litter sister. Both of them join Sanjeevani later on the second season.

Dr. Shilpa was played by Shilpa Anand, who was brought back to DMG due to public demand. Her character was supposed to be paired with Armaan since Riddhima was married to Sid at the time. In fact, they did share quite a few romantic moments but Armaan is always shown as brooding over Riddhima. I guess the creators were trying to create the SidMa relationship and didn't want to leave Armaan alone so Shilpa's character was created. Shilpa did have a crush on Armaan and later on she did fall for him. But Armaan never reciprocated her feelings. I personally felt like, SidMa looked weird. I didn't like the idea of Riddhima being with Sid since Sid was like a younger version of Armaan. Also I didn't like the way the Armaan-Shilpa story was progressing. There was just so much awkwardness. In the end the fans demanded that Armaan and Riddhima be brought back together. So Shilpa's character was written off. In the end it seemed like a huge waste for Shilpa Anand to be brought back.

I was so disappointed by the way the transition to the second was handled. I would have loved to see Armaan and Riddhima as a married couple being proctors to the new doctors and re-living their youth. It would be awesome to see the other interns as established doctors at Sanjeevani teaching the new lot of interns how it's done. After the transition, the story line suffered and became too complicated with unnecessary situations. I particularly hated the way the Riddhima-Armaan-Sid triangle was handled. All through the show the audience is made to believe that Armaan and Riddhima are soul mates and then boom Riddhima is married to Sid. That did not make sense to me at all. I did not understand why Ridhhima wanted to stay with Sid even though she did not love him. In fact Sid even filed for divorce, but she wouldn't go through with it. That angle was just too difficult to digest. Regardless towards the end of its run, Armaan and Riddhima finally proclaim their love for each other and vow to stay together.

Even though I was disappointed with the way the story progressed, I loved the final scene. I would be lying if I said I did not shed a tear...

  1. Really? Did the final scene really made one shed a tear? Well then, I guess I would have to download the last few episodes as well. Actually I stopped watching the soap after its 700th episode. Couldn't digest anymore. Had heard a lot about this popular show. Hence, went ahead and started watching it on YouTube, and soon fell for it! Simply loved the chemistry between the leads initially. But gradually started wondering why didn't they ever show Armaan wearing a cape! He was no less than a superhero after all! I couldn't even keep a count as to how many times he injured his head! Then a 'temporary memory loss' or whatever it is called in medical terms. And finally a 'bang' against that glass table or whatever (in the last episode of part 1). But Christ! There he came back intact in season 2, when I almost had got AR out of my mind because of the new developments and started smiling over the cute, funny and the lovey-dovey moments shared between Ridhhima and Siddhant. It was like chewing a bitter nut all of a sudden! But then, I was relieved when the makers introduced Shilpa, hoping that the duo would fall for each other and create a magic! But no! Turns out that Armaan had become one selfish freak who could think of nothing apart from Ridhhima! I could now clearly see the result of the consecutive head injuries that had turned him into a blockhead! That nutcase suffered from "Relationship obsessive–compulsive disorder" and no one at Sanjeevani could notice the symptoms! LOL! And that drama-queen Ridhhima! I know by now the readers must have started picking up stones. But before you all start throwing them at me just imagine your wife/girl saying 'I love you' to you and the next moment getting ready to make love with a man in spite of knowing its not you. I am talking about Episode 690 where she mistakenly hugs Armaan and confesses her love thinking he was Siddhant. But the next moment, even after realizing that the guy was not her husband, gets ready to make love! What the hell! I say she too was a psycho and suffered from Dissociative identity disorder! LOL! On top of that when Siddhant gets pissed after knowing all this shit, our madam instead of trying to make it up decides to move on with her life all alone! Good God! Would you readers ever want such a twisted female in your life? Why the hell did she put Siddhant in such agony? Why did she marry him in the first place? She wasn’t such dumb who couldn’t convince her dad that she could deal with her desolation by herself. And dear makers, did you really have to show Siddhant such a ‘bechara’? By the end, I was utterly confused not knowing whom to empathize with. But thank God Armaan and Riddhima were together in the end as mentioned in this article. No, I am not happy as the two were able to proclaim their love. I say this because those two maniacs were fit for each other and nobody else. And thus Siddhant was saved. However, Siddhant did not have to be such a goat, who did so much for that undeserving female, loved her madly and ended up with nothing. At least he could have been paired by the creatives with someone decent in the end.

    1. As I mentioned in the article, I did not like how the makers of the show transitioned to the second season. They way they ended Armaan and Riddhima's love story at the end of the first season felt very incomplete and abrupt. Regardless, I went along and continued watching the show. I started liking the new characters and was starting to enjoy their love stories as well. I did not understand why the makers decided to pair Siddhant with Riddhima after establishing that Riddhima and Armaan are the ones who are "supposed to be together". They also showed Siddhant in love with Tamanna previously. So it was little strange that he would suddenly fall in love with Riddhima. Also I agree with you about the whole Armaan and Shilpa pairing. Why bring Shilpa back when she was going to be written out later on? I just felt like towards the end, the show became confusing and story was becoming more and more absurd. But I have to say, as an Armaan and Riddhima loyalist, I'm glad things worked out for them in the end...

  2. Yup, you may be right Banannie. But I would still say Transition of Armaan's character was really awkward. From the beginning of the show he had been difficult and adamant. Although he would always be ready to help everyone and stand up for his friends anytime, he would also behave ruthlessly with anybody, be it his friend or anyone whenever he wished depending on his mood. Atul, Anjali, Rahul, Muskaan, Abhimanyu, Nikita, Yuvraj, Naina, JP, Shilpa...he spared no one. Siddhant aur Ridhhima ki baat to chhodh hi do! But gradually, he turned lunatic as well. He acted God to bring Siddhant and Riddhima close. But once he succeeded he wasn't able to stand them together and kept having his evil eyes on them! How twisted! No wonder he was that nutcase Bili's son! Like father like son- crackpots! And Ridhhima too was no less. She acted weird unnecessarily with anyone and everyone including her parents whenever she felt like. One literally had to poke his/her finger inside their brains and tickle to make them realize their faults and that they have put someone in trouble or hurt him/her. Episode 690 that I mentioned of previously was shocking and almost unbearable to watch for me being an ardent follower of the show! There were so many other episodes where she proved herself to be unstable, dimwitted, misfit and fickle minded. By the end of the show both these characters had started getting onto my nerves. I almost burst into peels of laughter at Armaan's dialogues when he tells Siddhant, "Tum humare pyaar ko kabhi samajh hi nahi paye. Humara pyaar bohot alag hai. Koi bandhan, shadi ya phere humare beech nahi aa sakte!" Hilarious! Did he mean their relationship was celestial? Something like Adam's and Eve's? Good that they united in the end, demented psychos made for each other :P

    1. I completely agree with you! Both Armaan and Riddhima are interesting characters. They are both stubborn and have a mind of their own. They strongly believe that what they do is right and will do anything to prove it to their detractors. It makes sense to me why such childish characters were meant to be together. Initially, DMG was fun and light but as the show progressed, it started to become stagnant. The love story between Armaan and Riddhima became even more over the top and incredulous. Now, when I look back, it almost seems absurd. Never the less, I will say that the only reason fans still talk about Armaan and Riddhima is because of the chemistry between the leads. Karan Singh Grover was able to create amazing chemistry with all three of his leading ladies, Shilpa Anand, Sukirti Kandpal and Jennifer Winget. When it comes to the second season of the show, the creators seriously faltered. I still can't believe that they chose to kill off the only characters that kept the show going. They introduced new characters but did not do them justice at all. They simply created complications in all of their love stories just as ploy to bring Riddhima back. And of course after they brought Riddhima back, Armaan couldn't be left out. Needless to say after all the ups and downs, I'm glad that they were finally able to end on a happy note and justify Armaan and Riddhima's love story.
